Description
Home Made Home and Rubbing, Wall are video works that attempt to visualize a conceptual landscape within the two-dimensional screen space by exploring poetic writing, action-painting, and chroma key technology. The work is based on the personal reflection on place and belonging in the context of the artist’s diasporic reality. The result is an aesthetic experiment that challenges the Western understanding of image, which emphasizes three-dimensionality, by applying the aesthetics of flatness seen in East Asian paintings that explored the relationship of the landscape and the painter on a flat surface. The video is a continuation of the artist’s search for artistic and identity-making processes that suggest new ways of thinking outside the dominant Western canon.
Rubbing, Wall is a continuation of the contemplations of the artist which began with Home Made Home. It imagines a world where someone thinks about someone else from a distant place in a world divided by a wall.
Home Made Home depicts the imaginary island – located in between his two homelands – which is a place the artist imagined to console himself for not having a sense of belonging anywhere in this world.
