The Asian Art Publication Lab (AAPlab) is holding its third international conference, “Environmental Resilience and Sustainability in Korean Arts: Explorations, Reflections, and Comparisons” on February 22-24, 2024 at the University of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The conference defines the term “environment” through ecosophy, ecology, and equilibria in response to Félix Guattri’s Three Ecologies in response to the Korean Canadian artist Jin-me Yoon’s poetic vision.
The AAPlab intersects academic and non-academic cultural communities, and the conference invites proposals from Artists, researchers, scholars of all backgrounds exploring and revisiting the relationship between ecological environments, topics of industrialization and technology.

- Global warming, Climate change
- Ethics of Care, Routine
Our environmental and social relations have become acute and radical. Despite our utmost efforts to restore one’s substantial-ecological living environments, the more we are informed of and come into contact with more advanced technology, the more our ecological being is affected by the perils of sociopolitical and cultural disequilibrium, atomization, complexities in media literacy, mass media, and alienation, to name a few. The conference takes a microcosmic approach to center Korean visual and media arts, which can be extended to Asian arts, as we seek to examine and envision social and environmental relational discourse in art theory and artworks. In resonance with Korean film director BONG Joon-Ho’s remark “Films, novels and all creative works, they always reflect the violence that exists in the world”, we will examine and revisit our living mode and ecological perceptions of today and tomorrow.
Our everyday life undeniably relies on technology, and technology is stuck in a relationship that demands constant interaction with cultural and economic value. With the emergence of 3 ESG (the consideration of environmental issues, social issues, and corporate governance), the interrelationality has become inseparable between human beings, technology, and the economic value of materiality in the 21st century. In response to Japanese farmer and philosopher Masanobu Fukuoka, “the more people do, the more society develops, the more problems arise”, the conference will cross-examine our global struggle to renegotiate and reinvent our relationship in the current ecological landscape.
We welcome proposals on local-international environments, such as ties or connections between Canada and Asia. The geographical and cultural area of Korean visual and media arts is intended to be an entrance to or mirror of Asian arts that include Korean popular arts (Hallyu studies). As such, the conference welcomes proposals that examine and explore Korean or Asian arts, or comparative studies to Western arts in line with the theme.
Academics, artists and graduate students of all backgrounds are welcomed to submit a proposal. The conference is open to essays in various forms of visual language, such as docu-essays, photo-essays, and conference paper presentations.
An applicant may only submit one proposal written either in English or French, consisting of a 250-word abstract and a short biography. The conference aims to be conducted in both languages with simultaneous interpretation services.

Asian Art Publication Lab (AAPLab) is a Montreal-based research and creation laboratory at the intersection of arts and technology. Our goal is to bridge the gap between the East and West by decolonizing Asian arts through inclusive and critical dialogue. We publish and translate textbooks, essays, and lived stories based on art practices and experiments, and provide a platform for innovative Pan-Asian art projects.
