Description

Video by: Jad Orphée Chami, Angelina Guo & kimura byol lemoine

With: Moe Clark, Maya Cousineau Mollen & Soleil Launière

In the process of creating this piece, we hoped to take a closer, introspective look into our relationship to the unceded land on which we live. While our ancestors may not have directly contributed to its colonization, we benefit from privileges resulting from this system which come at the expense of First Nations communities. Thus, we launched ourselves into this project in the spirit of building pathways between those with immigrant backgrounds and First Nations individuals, starting a conversation between uprooted people, as well as sharing our respective realities. By creating echoes between our experiences of injustice, we sought to highlight the complexity and the vulnerability of this relationship, all the while finding common ground through our shared struggles and artistic motivations. We did not, however, seek out a “solution”, but rather saw this project as an opportunity to deepen our bonds, to learn and to create together. At the heart of this initiative, we sought to question our relationship to the land, which is already shaped by our stories of migration, as well as to imagine alternative decolonial pathways towards justice for people of color and First Nations communities.
